Remembering Cathy Hudgins

On May 24, 2025, we mourned the passing of Cathy Hudgins, whose dedication to the community left a lasting legacy. She served as the Hunter Mill District supervisor from 2000 until her retirement in 2019. One of Hudgins’ most enduring legacies was the creation of the Southgate Community Center in Reston. Opened in 2006, the center was the result of her vision and determination to establish a space for community engagement and vital services. In recognition of her leadership, the facility was renamed the Cathy Hudgins Community Center at Southgate in 2021.

“Laughter to Uplift” Fundraiser

A joyful evening filled with laughter and generosity! “Laughter to Uplift”, by Resonance Improv Alliance (RIA) improvisers, transformed the audience’s suggestions into side-splitting scenes. Guests were able to buy raffle tickets for a beautiful pair of diamond earrings, donated by Aspen Jewelry.

We raised over $1,200 through ticket sales, raffle tickets, and community donations!

July

The Closet Grant Award

We were grateful to receive a $2,500 grant from The Closet, a non-profit thrift store in Herndon, VA, which helped us expand our impact. The Closet grants to local non-profits that directly or indirectly support low-income families in Fairfax and Loudoun counties.

Funds will go towards Enrichment Awards, technical support, and a shed for the center.

August 2

Community Day at CHCC

Hundreds of neighbors joined us for a fun-filled day with raffles and activities for all ages. Vendors were able to share information and educate attendees about the various services and opportunities in the area.

There was food, games, raffles, and so much fun! Attendees also had the opportunity to sign and write a heartfelt message on our Cathy Hudgins Banner to show their appreciation.

August 9

A Fun Family Bingo Night

Families came together to enjoy a night of Bingo. We supplied the prizes for the winners.

August 9

Cardboard Boat Regatta

We’re grateful for the RoSigle Foundation for sponsoring the Center’s entry in the Cardboard Boat Regatta at Lake Anne.  Youth at CHCC were able to design and build a cardboard boat and proudly participate in this annual community tradition that celebrates creativity, teamwork, and hands-on learning.

December 18

Dogwood Elementary School Glow Walk

Around 250 students gathered to walk from Cathy Hudgins Community Center at Southgate to Dogwood Elementary School in their glowing attire. We were happy to support this festive event by providing hot dogs and hot chocolate for everyone!

Ongoing Community Support

Monthly Family Dinners

In partnership with RestonStrong, we supported monthly family dinners welcoming about 60 community members. Highlights included a Black History Month presentation in February and a Mini Haunted House after our October dinner.

Thank you to our partners, volunteers, donors, and neighbors for making 2025 a year of compassion, connection, and community strength. Together, we continue to make a difference.
